How GetBuilo Identifies Your Competitors
You don’t need to manually provide a list of competitors to get started. GetBuilo uses your idea description and business model context to generate a set of targeted research queries, then runs those queries through Firecrawl to discover and crawl the most relevant competing products. The AI evaluates each result against your idea and selects the top competitors—typically five to ten—most relevant to your specific category, target customer, and geography. The discovery process surfaces three types of competitors:- Direct Competitors — Products that solve the same problem for the same customer in the same way you plan to.
- Indirect Competitors — Products that solve the same problem through a different approach, or serve an adjacent customer segment. These are often overlooked but shape how buyers think about alternatives.
- Substitute Solutions — Non-product alternatives your target customers currently use to solve the problem, such as spreadsheets, manual processes, or hiring someone. Understanding substitutes helps you frame your value proposition against the real status quo.
What the Analysis Covers
For each identified competitor, GetBuilo generates a structured profile containing:- Pricing — Known pricing tiers, price points, and model (subscription, freemium, one-time, etc.), sourced directly from the competitor’s pricing page.
- Core Features — A summary of the competitor’s main capabilities, derived from their website, feature pages, and marketing copy.
- Positioning — How the competitor describes itself and who it targets—extracted from their homepage, tagline, and messaging.
- Strengths — What the competitor does well based on their product depth, customer reviews, and market presence.
- Weaknesses — Where the competitor falls short, based on patterns in customer reviews, community feedback, and obvious gaps in their offering.
The Competitive Gap Analysis
Beyond individual competitor profiles, GetBuilo synthesizes the full competitive landscape into a Gap Analysis—a structured view of where all current solutions collectively underserve the market. This is where the most actionable insights live. The Gap Analysis identifies:- Feature Gaps — Capabilities that multiple competitors lack or handle poorly, representing potential product differentiators.
- Segment Gaps — Customer segments that existing competitors ignore or serve inadequately. These represent potential beachhead markets.
- Pricing Gaps — Price points that are either underserved (room for a more affordable option) or unexploited (room for a premium offering with better quality signaling).
- Positioning Gaps — Messaging angles that no current competitor owns, giving you an opportunity to claim a distinct narrative in the market.
How to Run Your Competitor Analysis
1
Open your project and navigate to Competitor Analysis
From the left sidebar of your project, click Competitor Analysis under the Founder Journey section. If you’ve already run Market Research, GetBuilo may have pre-populated some competitor names from that research pass.
2
Review the automatically discovered competitors
GetBuilo displays the competitors it identified along with a brief summary of each. Review the list to confirm they’re genuinely relevant to your business. Remove any that don’t apply—for example, a company in a different geography or adjacent category that the AI included but you know isn’t a real competitor for you.
3
Add any competitors the AI missed
If you know of specific competitors that didn’t appear in the auto-discovery, click + Add Competitor, enter the company name or website URL, and GetBuilo will crawl their site and generate a full competitor profile automatically.
4
Review individual competitor profiles
Click into each competitor card to read their full profile. Pay particular attention to the Weaknesses section—these are the pain points that real customers have with existing solutions and represent your clearest opportunities to win.
5
Review the Gap Analysis
Scroll to the Competitive Gap Analysis section at the bottom of the module. Read through the feature, segment, pricing, and positioning gaps. Highlight the gaps that align with your current idea and note any that suggest a pivot or refinement.
6
Use positioning recommendations to sharpen your differentiation
GetBuilo generates Positioning Recommendations based on the gap analysis—specific suggestions for how you can describe your product to stand out clearly from the competition. Review these and consider incorporating the strongest positioning angles into your value proposition and marketing copy.
7
Export your competitor analysis
Click Export Analysis to download the complete competitor analysis as a PDF or Markdown file. The export includes all competitor profiles, the gap analysis, and the positioning recommendations—ready to share with co-founders, advisors, or investors.
